2008 Summer Institute
July 22-24, 2008
The Institute will be held at the Orlando Museum of
Art and the Orlando Shakespeare Theater.
Located in Orlando’s Loch Haven Arts Park, this setting
will allow Institute participants to interact with the artworks
exhibited in the Museum’s collection as well as to attend
sessions and available rehearsals held in other Arts Park venues,
including the Orlando Shakespeare Theater, Orlando-UCF Repertory
Theatre, and the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra halls.
The Institute Program The Institute will include five
types of sessions:
General Sessions:
All Institute participants will gain valuable information on
current programs, thinking, and research in arts integration
in order to build their leadership potential. Success strategies
from schools will be shared.
Participants will be empowered to carry what they learn and experience
back to their own settings.
General Sessions are for all participants to:
- Build understanding of the “why” of arts integration:
- Research to support arts integrated teaching and learning
- Reports from successful arts integrated schools
- Plan implementation strategies for arts integration “at
home.”
Arts Sessions:
All Institute participants will experience
hands-on sessions in each of the arts: music, dance/movement,
drama, and visual arts. Arts sessions are offered by dynamic
experts in small group settings. Sessions will emphasize the
development of arts knowledge and skill while simultaneously
integrating the arts with the curriculum. Participants will experience
strategies and arts materials to transform classroom practices.
Arts Sessions are for all participants to:
- Develop personal knowledge and skill in each art form.
- Experience strategies linking arts to the overall curriculum.
- Build techniques for collaborative learning

- Experience strategies to develop powerful thinking skills
.
Choice Sessions
Choice Sessions are designed to meet the individual needs and
interests of participants. All sessions will focus on building
knowledge and skill in the arts while learning applicable effective
teaching strategies and techniques for integrating the arts throughout
the Pre-K – grade 12 curriculum. Participants may choose
to:
- Continue work in one or more of the art forms presented
in the Arts Sessions
- Experience the integration of various arts forms into a
particular curriculum area (e.g. reading)
- Attend a “job-alike” session for school administrators.
- Participate in special sessions for artists in the classroom.
- Experience the success strategies of schools which have
successfully implemented

Round Table Discussions
During Wednesday’s luncheon, participants may choose to “lunch
and learn” by joining a table presentation/discussion led
by an expert. Discussions will include information on identifying
resources to support your program; the brand new Orange County
Arts Education Center; Arts for a Complete Education/Florida
Alliance for Arts Education Arts Achieve! Schools; Florida Department
of Education initiatives; artists in the classroom; and linking
with the Community to enhance your work.
Planning for Arts Integration :
Sessions will be offered to school teams, artists,
and individuals planning for arts integration. Participants
will work directly with a facilitator who will assist them
in planning for cross-curricular arts integration and for school/community
change . Planning outcomes will be individualized
according to the needs, interests, and backgrounds of those
involved in creating the plan. The purpose of this planning
session is to:
- Develop a strategic plan for arts integration across the
curriculum, throughout the school, and in the community.
